Meet the Owner
Junk Works Halifax is a family-owned business. The franchise was purchased by Chris and Sherry Willison. Their Halifax Junk Removal business takes what most people consider junk and gives it new life.
Chris has advised businesses as a lawyer for years. He wanted to have an opportunity to run his own business. Junk Works gave him a turn-key solution to running a business in a client focused manner. He wanted to deliver excellent client service day in and day out and operate an environmentally responsible operation. Chris and Sherry saw a unique opportunity to set up and run a business from the start. Chris says, “it is a good way to learn about business and a great way to interact with people”.
The process begins with their transport trucks that can carry 18 cubic yards and up to 2.5 tons of material. This sized truck, 20% larger than most other junk removal companies, helps them to remove large or multiple pieces of furniture from homes and apartments or multiple items from businesses more efficiently and, for the customer, more economically.
It is often difficult for customers to reclaim their space. They do not have the time or the ability to remove items like big televisions, appliances, refrigerator/freezers, e-waste, yard waste, hot tubs, fencing, or wood and construction debris. Some people want the job done the same day but want the items disposed of responsibly and reused, recycled, or re-purposed whenever possible.
Chris and his team take the junk back to their warehouse and Sherry sorts through the items they collect. Some of it, like a worn-out refrigerator, is unusable and will be recycled. Other items, like furniture and clothes, will be donated to charities like Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Parker Street and other people and organisations in need.
Sherry and Chris also like to support local initiatives and often donate pick-ups and bin rentals to local groups such as the Sackville Rotary Club and the Salvation Army for their Recycle Your Cycle campaign, donate to sports team fundraisers and auctions, sponsor a duck in the Sackville River Association duck race, take part in Christmas Parades in various communities and each year run a toy drive to support the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada, Bryony House and the IWK.
Sherry says, “it is not your typical job but meeting the clients and talking to them is fun”. She further adds, “because we are recycling and we have a warehouse where we can take the items we pick up, we are minimizing what we take to the landfill and regularly recycle over 80% of the items we pick up”.
